What to Expect in Serengeti?

The Kisura Serengeti Camp operates round the year and is strategically located in the centre of the region offering easy access to the North, South, East and West. Tanzania’s most extraordinary wildlife and internationally known Great Migration can be viewed as you book your shelter at this all-inclusive tent place.

Explore during April – April is the time to witness herds consistently. You must not miss the chance of viewing cute little new-born calves and foals as they begin to get mobile. Many people love an East African Safari and the Northern Tanzania circuit is a destination of year-round safari experience for tourists. The Serengeti National Park remains spectacular at all times of year but many guests worry about rainy seasons especially for game reserves (Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater). They fear that they might need to stay indoors all the time but this is not true.

This part of Tanzania doesn’t witness rain all day long. Rain happens occasionally and it could be really intense like a thunderstorm for some time but in about an hour you will witness bright sun. Rains usually happen during late afternoon and during night. But even if it does rain during the best times for game drives, you can still enjoy all the activities right after it. Hot air balloon safari and game viewing becomes more attractive after rain and the golden expanded grassland transforms itself into a truly beautiful green ground covering. So don’t be put off by rains and let the drama of storms unfold; until then enjoy delicious meals at the camp.

With northern Tanzania region located only some degrees towards south equator, temperatures and weather patterns here only have minor fluctuations round the year. Two different rainy seasons are witnessed round the year:

  • Mid of March till May – long rains
  • November and early December – short rains
  • December till Mid of March and June till October – dry season

Terms long and short rains are not used to define heavy or light rains but as these terms were adopted in early times by local farmers; they simply signify length of the rainy season. Long rains usually last for around 8 weeks whereas short rains last for 4 weeks only.

The patterns of rainy seasons usually remain same for all the other National park Circuits of Tanzania along with gorilla-trekking spots of Uganda and Rwanda.

There exists some unique advantages that makes us fall in love with wet months in this region.

  • The parks are usually empty.
  • You get affordable rates and great value for prices charged.
  • Impressive photographs can be captured as there will be no dust and the light would be clear.
  • This time can be best for witnessing flock of migrating birds. The only time to witness attractive widowbirds and whydahs in their complete action.

Rain in Tanzania is full of life with stunning skies presenting dramatic lightening scenes, beautiful rainbows and peaceful green, clean and soft environment.

East Africa in the Wet Season

  • The Ngorongoro Crater – This region is often considered to be best visited during wet season as the crater is usually tranquil (less visitors), dust-free (less vehicles) and wonderfully lush green.
  • Serengeti – The area around Serengeti have miles of open plains rolling all around. During rains, it is even softer and greener land free of dust as long as you avoid areas that are inaccessible.
  • Rwanda or Uganda gorillas and chimp trekking – It could be tough with muds around but practically there would not be much difficulty. This season brings in new growth shooting around the bamboo forests. The gorilla heaven trekking offers great value for a memorable trip.

Explore during November – Rains may begin and November is usually cooler but it still remains a good time to view wildebeest. During November, regions like Lobo, Seronera Valley and Mbuze Mawe has abundant water and these are the areas where herds would be in abundance.

Explore during December – Central Serengeti would witness short rains and weather would remain wet throughout December. The herds would move quickly towards the plains of southern region.
